Hans

It was 9:00 PM, the night after Halloween. Almost all the kids in the neighborhood stood there in the dark, gasping with anticipation every time a car turned the corner onto our street. I couldn’t wait until one of those cars was my mom’s, bringing home our adorable little puppy, named Hobbes.

Jamie and Lexie

Jamie and Lexie

I spent the previous summer working and saving for a puppy so I was able to use my earnings to buy a Farmdog from Carol, Lexie's breeder. I came up with half the money and my parents decided that I was responsible enough to care for a dog so they paid for the other half and we prepared to bring Lexie home. I kept a countdown of the days it would be until Lexie was old enough. I still remember the day we got to go to Carol's home and see Annika and five cute, little puppies.

Kenlyn and Skoen

A teen making a Difference for Throw Away Pets

Kenlyn's deep love of animals inspired her to look for an opportunity to help discarded and abandon pets. After contacting several humane societies where she hoped she could volunteer and being refused because she is not yet 18 years old, Kenlyn and her mom, Susan, were introduced to the Friends of Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA), a support organization for a local animal shelter.

DSFCA 5th National Breed Specialty Show and Seminar

November 12th, 13th and 14th, 2010

In conjunction with

American Rare Breed Association
Hollywood Classic Show

at
Hotel Claremont
840 South Indian Hill Blvd.
Claremont, CA 91711
909-621-4831

The show will be held outdoors on the lawn.

What do I bring?

  • It might be a good idea to bring some shade for both you and your dog(s). We can double up and share with the people that will be traveling.
  • Folding chairs
  • Crate or x-pen for your dog(s)

What do I wear?

  • Business attire is standard. -- Large graphic logo shirts
    are not appropriate.
  • Comfortable shoes that are safe for the environment.
  • Having a pocket in the outfit will give you some place for treats. -- Treat bags are not to worn in the ring.
  • You need sleeves as your armband is actually a clip-on that is
worn on your left sleeve. -- You have to ware your armband in the
    ring.
  • Remember to pack your Armband. ARBA only issues one. If this is your first show you will get your armband at check in.

What should I do to prepare for the show?

  • You will need to have a show lead. Your dog must show without a collar or harness.
  • Practice looking at your dogs teeth; it is good to have other people look at your dog's teeth as well. The judge will be checking teeth. Check the teeth with your dog on a waist high table, make it fun. Practice with treats, praise, and joy. The table should be a happy place.
  • If you have a chance, some trainers do teach conformation.
  • Try to have all vaccines administered at least month ahead of show, administering just before you travel can cause trauma.

What do I do at the show?

  • Get there early to set up your camp.  Please arrive by 7:30 to check in.
  • When you are in the ring be polite, keep the spacing don’t crowd the dog ahead of you.
  • If you are using treats in the ring please try not to spill on the ground.
  • Be sure to walk your dog before the ring, but just in case have a bag tucked away.
  • For those with males, there will be females in heat at a show. Keep your dog away, it is your responsibility. Some will tell you their dog is hot, that is not a comment on their looks but that they are in heat.
  • As we have a judge giving us written critiques please stay quit at ring side so we all can hear or at least the transcriber can hear the judge.

About Ole Staunskjaer

Ole Staunskjaer 70 years

The 21st of November (2007), Ole Staunskjaer turns 70. It is probably no exaggeration, that Ole Staunskjaer is the Danish dog person, who most obviously has made a name for Danish dog sport on the national and international scene in the past 30-35 years.

Ole is basically born in a dog bed! Kennel Blaaholms Great Danes is still a concept re-known world wide, and this kennel, which Ole’s parents started in the first half of the 19th century also became part of Ole’s life-work. But it is not the only breeding he has put his touch to, also boxers and - along with his wife Tove - Lhasa Apso, not a very large number, but the very highest of international quality, has departed from the Staunskjaers’ home.

Young man with talent

Ole hadn’t turned 20, when he became a judge for “his” first breed (that was Boxer). Soon other breeds followed, because DKK and several breed clubs realized, that here was a young man, with an unusual flair for dog! And even a man, who both could, dared, and wanted to express what he saw. He did it so well, and was so requested as a judge, that he through more than 25 years became educated on so many breeds, that he in 1989 became Denmark’s only 2nd all-round judge ever through time.

The show life and the breeding has naturally been Ole’s main occupation, but as it often goes, then one doesn’t “steer clear of” taking a shift in the association life, when one would like to influence the development in what one burns for. Through the board work in the Great Dane club, the Boxer club, FSK etc. he was in 1977 encouraged to run for election to DKKs board.

In 1977 there had been a “revolution” in Danish Kennel Club. The board had left in anger, and a temporary board, consisting of 4 people, ran the club through a chaotic summer, where the election of a new board for the club, was the main chore. They succeeded, and November 15th 1977, Ole Staunskjaer was among others elected.

Straight forward

“Your’s truly” was also elected, and with the board work started my co-operation – and many year friendship – with Ole. Let it be said clearly: It is not for the quiet and shy, to sit on a board with Ole Staunskjaer! The sensitive diplomacy and the tendency to call a spade for an appropriate digging tool, is not exactly him! Rather, one is never in doubt about, what he feels about a case, and how he feels it should be solved, because he says so himself, so liberating clearly in such simple Danish that anybody can understand it!

It was never Ole Staunskjaer’s intention to be a board member in DKK for such a long time, as it has been. More than 25 years! Most of the time as treasurer, and member of the business committee, and a number of years as co-chairman. His knowledge about the dog world, flair for economy and leadership, and a tremendous effort and hard work, signifies Ole’s board work.

Ole became, when well known M.M. Madsen retired, the natural successor as chairman for the very important Exterior Judge’s Committee. He was a prominent member of the Show Committee, for a couple of periods also the chairman, and he was a member of our FCI/NKU (Nordic Kennel Union) committee, and he was Denmark’s representative in FCI’s Show Committee and Judge’s Committee.

A particular reward filled job, has Ole conducted in the Committee for Forgotten and National breeds. It is not too much to claim, that without his finger tip feel for breeding and cynology, we would have not had such a typology solid Broholmer today, and the Danish/Swedish Farmdog would not have  the status it has.

In 2003, Danish Kennel Club’s highest authority, the representatives, declared Ole an honorable member of DKK. That is an extremely rare honor, which in the soon 110-year long history of the club, only has been granted to a total of 8 persons!

A requested gentleman

It doesn’t seem like Ole has realized, that he is turning 70! He is unequalled the Danish judge, who judges in other countries the most frequent, and it is no exaggeration, that he is invited so often, that he could be allowed to judge dogs somewhere on the globe 3 times every weekend year round, if time allowed!

The breeding has slowed down, but to Ole’s and Tove’s great joy, the Great Danes continue in the family. The daughter Camilla and son-in-law Carsten has successful breeding of the breed, and I should know Ole poorly, if he doesn’t still attempt to  have a say, whether he is asked or not.

When someone like you Ole, has the nose so far forward, then sometimes one has to take “one over the nose” as well. You have never complained about that! Our shared friend, John Rasmussen, Kennel Alsatian, once said, when I had gotten myself in a newspaper’s “wringer”: “On big trees the wind blows, on small trees the dogs pee”. That absolutely goes for you too!

Dear Ole: Happy Birthday! Thank you for your life long devotion to Danish dog sport. Thank you for what you have taught me, and thank you for an inspiring co-operation through many years. Thank you for your friendship!

May the wind blow on you for many years to come!

Joergen Hindse, (Chairman of DKK)
