Hans

It was 9:00 PM, the night after Halloween. Almost all the kids in the neighborhood stood there in the dark, gasping with anticipation every time a car turned the corner onto our street. I couldn’t wait until one of those cars was my mom’s, bringing home our adorable little puppy, named Hobbes.

Jamie and Lexie

Jamie and Lexie

I spent the previous summer working and saving for a puppy so I was able to use my earnings to buy a Farmdog from Carol, Lexie's breeder. I came up with half the money and my parents decided that I was responsible enough to care for a dog so they paid for the other half and we prepared to bring Lexie home. I kept a countdown of the days it would be until Lexie was old enough. I still remember the day we got to go to Carol's home and see Annika and five cute, little puppies.

A teen making a Difference for Throw Away Pets

Kenlyn's deep love of animals inspired her to look for an opportunity to help discarded and abandon pets. After contacting several humane societies where she hoped she could volunteer and being refused because she is not yet 18 years old, Kenlyn and her mom, Susan, were introduced to the Friends of Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA), a support organization for a local animal shelter.

A Teen Making a Difference For Throw Away Pets

By Tonya JensenKenlyn with Skoen, 2007

If you attended the 2007 Specialty show you may remember a young girl that couldn't get enough of the dogs, hers, yours, or any dog that happened to be within her reach. Kenlyn, then a preteen, not only showed her own Farmdog, Skoen, (pictured on the left) she kept busy entertaining any dog in her near proximity. If she wasn't walking a dog, showing her dog, or holding a dog, you could find Kenlyn in the community x-pen surrounded by the occupants. The dogs loved her as much as she loved them.

Specialty, 2007 Kenlyn's deep love of animals inspired her to look for an opportunity to help discarded and abandon pets. After contacting several humane societies where she hoped she could volunteer and being refused because she is not yet 18 years old, Kenlyn and her mom, Susan, were introduced to the Friends of Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA), a support organization for a local animal shelter.

Kenlyn and her friendMom, Susan, became involved with the SVACA BOD and Kenlyn began participating in fund raising activities to support the shelter. In May of 2009 SVACA had a display at Dog-e-Races, a flyball tournament sponsored by Pawdemonium. Kenlyn and her friend, Bronwyn (pictured on the left), distributed collar ribbons to all the rescue dogs participating in the tournament to designate them as the special dogs they are. Ribbons adorned the collars of 88 dogs in attendance that were given a second chance. AND--the girls collected nearly $100 dollars in donations to support the shelter.

Kenlyn and her dog Skoen Soon, Kenlyn and her family will be fostering rescued animals in need until they are ready to go to a forever new home. This will allow Kenlyn to really make a big difference even before she is 18-years old.

We've asked Kenlyn to write the story for Feature Farmdog about her family and how their special Farmdog, Skoen, came to be a part of their lives. You can read about Skoen next month.

Kenlyn and Dottie, 2007Cheers for Kenlyn and all those who make a difference in the lives of animals.

Watch for more about our Farmdog Kids in future articles. We have several families in which the children have activities that they share with their Danish/Swedish Farmdogs.

Update

Kenlyn continues to be active for animals. She doesn't just pay lip service to helping, she actively finds ways to work to make a better life for abandon pets. The Web address will take you to a little spot light on Kenlyn's efforts to benefit Furry Friends Rescue. The Mirbach's have taken in several foster dogs lately in support of Kenlyn's efforts. Skoen has proven to be a great foster brother.
